President-Elect hopeful of peaceful transition after Supreme Court verdict

President-Elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has expressed hope to move forward for a smooth transition following the Supreme Court verdict.

In a statement issued, the president-elect said the Maldivian people can finally enjoy clarity regarding the outcome of the presidential election after weeks of uncertainty. In the statement, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih called on incumbent President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom to accept the will of the people and genuinely work towards facilitating the transition.

Moreover, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih said it is imperative the new administration delivers on the promises made during the election, by respecting people’s rights, consolidating democracy, upholding the constitution, and by delivering peace and prosperity for all citizens.

Furthermore, the statement noted the petition to annul the election was frivolous and spoke more about an inability in some quarters to accept defeat, than any genuine concerns about the vote.
