No discussions were held to abolish any political party: Elections Commission

Elections Commission of Maldives has refuted rumours circulated stating the electoral body is seeking to abolish a political party of Maldives.

Speaking to PSM News, Spokesperson and member of Elections Commission Ahmed Akram said any comments made which may interpret as abolishing a political party are false, adding such rumours are spread to defame the electoral body of the country at such a delicate period for the country. Any situation which could or would abolish a political party is stated in the Political Party Act, Akram noted. He highlighted if a situation arises from any political party, the Elections Commission would notify the party. Moreover, Akram said no discussions or comments were mentioned regarding abolishing a political party in the past or within the period since the conclusion of the presidential election.

However, in a tweet, Deputy Minister at Ministry of Home Affairs Ahmed Sideeq said information have been received that discussions are underway to abolish Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), adding supporters of President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom must voice out against Elections Commission and make the best use of Article 27 of constitution; Freedom of Speech.
