Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, who contested in the presidential election as the running mate of incumbent President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has said the days to come would be filled with terror and difficulty for religious scholars.
Dr. Shaheem, who also serves as the Chancellor of the Islamic University of Maldives (IUM) made the statement in response to International Spokesperson of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Hamid Abdul Ghafoor's tweet referring to India's refusal to grant entry to prominent Maldivian religious scholar Sheikh Adam Shameem.
In his tweet, Hamid Abdul Ghafoor stated in a sign of real engagement, India deported outgoing president's parliamentary leader and a cleric from his Salafist running mate's faction. Responding to the tweet, Shaheem questioned if it was fair to slight a person just because he belonged to a certain faction. He said such actions indicate the days to come would be filled with terror for religious scholars.
India has not yet disclosed the reason why Sheikh Adam Shameem was denied entrance to the country. India has also not allowed officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to meet the sheikh.
