Presidential campaigning concludes in Maldives

The two presidential candidates contesting in the presidential election have officially concluded their campaign activities.

Elections Commission of Maldives has urged political parties and public not to conduct any campaign activity from 1800hrs, Sunday to 0600hrs, Monday. Both candidates have concluded the campaign activities as instructed by the electoral body.

Citing Elections General Act, Elections Commission said no campaign or anti-campaign activity should be held within the given time frame on any platform.

The two candidates contesting in the upcoming presidential election are incumbent President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom will be bidding for a second five-year term, while the opposition party Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has granted the presidential ticket to Parliamentarian Ibrahim Mohamed Solih as its presidential candidate.

The voting will begin 0800hrs, Sunday in all across Maldives and in some countries. A total of 262,135 people are eligible to vote in the election. Elections commission will place 472 ballot boxes for the presidential election.
