FADs to be installed in accordance with quality technical and academic standards

Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture Dr. Mohamed Shainee has assured the government will continue installing fish aggregating devices (FADs) in accordance with quality technical and academic standards.

Revealing the Ministry of Fisheries and Agriculture has been receiving several requests by fishermen to install more FADs across the country, the minister noted there are several factors to consider before adding more devices. In this regard, the fisheries minister said such factors include avoiding one device overlapping the other and considering security measures.

The minister said the government has installed 5 FADs in the past five years and revealed the ministry has stepped up the efforts to repair the devices, cutting down the duration to repair a device to roughly one month.

The government of Maldives has successfully installed FADs across the country since 1981. Maldives remains the most successful country in using FADs in the world.
