Youth are now partners in developmental efforts: Home Minister

Minister of Home Affairs Azleen Ahmed has stated youth have become more responsible and there is no need for ankle monitors for youth to divert them from crime.

Youth are now partners of development of Maldives, Azleen Ahmed stated while speaking to PSM News adding, it shows the positive results of efforts exerted by the government to empower youth.

Noting previously, some people influenced the youth population and introduced murder, drugs and other socially unacceptable behaviour, Minister Azleen expressed confidence that youth are now more responsible and can no longer be influenced via such means.

Home Minister further highlighted youth are the future of the nation, adding the importance of prioritising their growth. The primary aim of the government is to reform criminals rather than punish them by tagging them, according to Minister Azleen.

The Home Minister also stated that it is the current administration that abolished the culture of torturing detainees. He said that instead of labelling convicts as people who serve the entirety of their sentences behind bars, they are being rehabilitated as useful members of society. Minister Azleen also noted that rehabilitation now includes opportunity for convicts to earn a living while serving their sentences.
