China-Maldives relations flourished over the past four years

President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom assumed office in 2013 with hopeful pledges and a visionary master plan to develop Maldives. President Abdulla Yameen began fulfilling the projects which were left by previous administrations and dreamed by the citizens across the country. The president also gained and enhanced the foreign investor trust in Maldives and opened numerous opportunities for investment.
China has been one main developmental partner of Maldives, assisting the government in its efforts to stabilise the economy which was left in turmoil by previous administrations. With one of the largest economies in the world investing in a small island nation like Maldives enabled the country to open a new doors of opportunities and widen the horizons for development.
Speaking with PSM News regarding the biggest ever infrastructure project conducted in Maldives, the Sina-Male Bridge, Ambassador of Maldives to China Mohamed Faisal described the tenure of President Yameen as the most successful years in terms of foreign relations, especially relations with the government and the people of China. Faisal said China concluding the project with the least possible interest rate proves the strong bond between the two countries.
In addition to the Sina-Male' Bridge, China is conducting many projects in Maldives, including the biggest ever runway constructed in Maldives, the fifth power project and 7,000 housing units as part of the social housing project announced by the government. Upon completion, all these projects will serve in the best interest of the people and benefit the economy of the country.
Meanwhile, Malaysia and Thailand among other countries are actively engaging in the development of Maldives, along with China. These collaborations and projects enhance the economy of Maldives and prove the investor trust in the country.
Maldives established foreign relations with China 45 years ago, in 1972.
