An Indian Member of Parliament calls on India to invade Maldives in case of vote rigging in the 2018 presidential polls.
In a tweet, Subramanian Swamy, a BJP member of Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian parliament said, India should invade Maldives if election rigging takes place.
Subramanian Swamy, exceptionally vocal in his anti-Islamic sentiments, has been implicated in several instances of incitement of violence against Muslims in India. A staunch supporter of Israel, Swamy plays a key role in efforts to strengthen the bond between India and Israel.
His call on India to invade Maldives in case of vote rigging comes in the wake of his meeting with former Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed in Colombo, Sri Lanka. In a tweet following the meeting, Swamy said that he had met the former President who is supposed to be serving what remains of a 13 year jail sentence.
Swamy said, the former President was apprehensive of gross vote rigging in the forthcoming election and that as a neighboring country, India needed an action plan to address the issue. Both foreigners and Maldivians alike criticized Swamy, responding to his latest tweet calling on India to invade Maldives.
A majority of condemnation came from Indian citizens. They called on Swamy to settled things in his own country before trying to right the wrongs elsewhere. Some politicians spoke up against Swamy’s appeal. They described his statement as a direct attempt to try and influence the upcoming presidential election in Maldives.
