Elections commission officially announces presidential candidates, candidacy order

Elections Commission of Maldives has officially announced the presidential candidates contesting in the upcoming presidential election. The elections commission also announced the candidate numbers of incumbent President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom and opposition coalition candidate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
At the special ceremony held at the elections commission by representatives of both candidates, the candidacy order was also drawn. In this regard, President Yameen drew candidate number one, while Ibrahim Mohamed Solih drew candidate number two. President Yameen was represented by Minister of Tourism Moosa Zameer and the opposition candidate was represented by Hisaan Hussain, at the ceremony.
The electoral body also announced the candidates can conduct campaign activities until 1800hrs of September 22. Following the announcement, President of Elections Commission Ahmed Shareef advised all political parties to conduct campaign activities within the guidelines of the constitution, urging to respect individual rights and maintain peace and harmony across the country.
The presidential election is scheduled to be held on September 23.
