Government to reclaim land from Hirilandhoo lagoon

Minister of Housing and Infrastructure Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has revealed plans to reclaim land from the lagoon of Hirilandhoo in Thaa Atoll to address the concerns raised due to the lack of usable land in the atoll.
The lagoon of Hirilandhoo is large in size and can be developed as an area such as Hulhumale' or Villimale-2, Housing Minister Mohamed Muizzu noted while speaking at a ceremony held at Madifushi in Thaa Atoll. The housing minister said the government has plans to solve the housing issues faced in the atoll by reclaiming land from Hirilandhoo lagoon. In this regard, the minister announced President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom will commence the project if he secures a second term in office.
Noting that President prioritises developing the Maldives as a whole, and not just the Greater Male' region, the minister added it is an aim to develop more infrastructure and solve the housing issues faced by all Maldivians.
Highlighting the achievements of the government within the past four years, the minister expressed the government has conducted 16 land reclamation projects, reclaiming 631 hectares of land in the process.
