Elections commission to place ballot boxes in 43 resorts

Elections Commission of Maldives has decided to place polling stations in 43 resorts for the upcoming presidential election.
Initially, elections commission decided to place ballot boxes in 7 resorts which was dismissed by all the political parties. The elections commission later revised its decision to place ballot boxes in resorts where more than 250 Maldivian staff resides, to address concerns raised by the political parties.
There are 77 resorts with more than 100 local staff, according to statistics. The electoral body and the Ministry of Tourism held discussions with resort managements to place ballot boxes in all resorts which meet the criteria, even though only 36 resorts agreed to facilitate voting to take place.
Elections commission has decided to place 490 ballot boxes for the upcoming presidential election. The 2018 presidential election will be held on September 23.
