Government works to ensure independence & sovereignty of police: Home Minister

Minister of Home Affairs Azleen Ahmed has stated major efforts are exerted by the government to ensure the independence and sovereignty of the police force. The current government will not back individuals undermining the good name of the police force, Home Minister Azleen Ahmed said while addressing the function held to celebrate the Police Memorial Day.
In his speech, the home minister highlighted the bravery of the police personnel martyred in duty, extending condolences to their families. Moreover, the minister expressed the institution is bestowed with huge responsibilities under the constitution of the Maldives, adding it is crucial to ensure the independence and sovereignty of the police force.
Minister Azleen further highlighted the efforts exerted by the government within the past four years to ensure necessary services and facilities are provided within the institution. Noting the whole institution need not be responsible for a mistake of one individual from the force, the minister said a mistake from certain individuals does not define the whole institution.
Meanwhile, during the ceremony, acting Commissioner of Police Abdulla Nawaz urged the courts to penalise individuals interrupting the duty of the police force. He said such actions from individuals cannot be accepted and noted the police will exert efforts to ensure peace is established in the country.
The Police Memorial Day is an annual nation-wide event which aims to remember, honour and pay respects to each and every police officer who lost their lives in the line of duty.
