Maldives National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MNCCI) has backed the economic policy of the administration of incumbent president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, ahead of the presidential election in September. The chamber had carefully studied the economic policy of every political party publicised ahead of the elections, Vice President Ismail Asif stated while speaking during a press conference.
Ismail Asif explained the economic manifesto of each party was weighed using the same parameters used in other countries to study the economic policies, which includes studying how the policies are shaped, how the development projects are planned and implemented and how relevant they are to local businesses. In this regard, Asif expressed after all the studies MNCCI has realised the economic policy of Progressive Party of Maldives as the most successful.
Moreover, Asif added the economic policies of the opposition both adopted in the past and planned for the future remain unsuitable for an economy such as the Maldives.
The opposition has expressed intentions to trade with some specific countries which he insisted was in contrast to the policies of MNCCI, he noted.
