Risk Assessment of World Health Organisation (WHO) has showed the risk of Nipah virus spreading in Maldives is low.
Previously, Health Protection Authority (HPA) warned of a possible Nipah outbreak in Maldives, but the risk assessment of WHO showed that Nipah virus reaching other neighbouring states of India, including Maldives is low. HPA stated it is monitoring the situation closely assuring they are taking necessary measures to ensure the disease does not spread in Maldives.
Even though there are no signs of Nipah virus in Maldives, it is important to stay vigilant as the host bat are found in the country, revealed HPA. Moreover, the authority advised to take necessary precautions when travelling to the south Indian state of Kerala.
Furthermore, HPA said even though there is no vaccine or drug available for humans or animals, the primary treatment is intensive supportive care for people suffering from severe respiratory and neurologic complications. HPA advised to pay special attention to hygienic practices when selling and consuming fruits.
The Nipah virus is an emerging zoonotic pathogen which is a virus transmitted to humans from animals with disturbing abilities.
