Maldives receives invitation to join Arab League

Maldives has received an invitation to join Arab League.
Speaking on a programme aired on PSM News, Ambassador Mohamed Hussain Shareef said the invitation to join the Arab league was extended due to the close relations President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom have with the Arab world. The Ambassador highlighted the invitation proves the close bond established and strengthened within the past few years. Noting such invitations and requests were not received by Maldives in the past, Ambassador Shareef said the invitation proves the success of the foreign policy implemented by the President.
The Arab League is a regional organisation of Arab states. The league which was formed in 1945 with six members, now has a membership of 22 countries. The main goal of Arab League is to draw closer relations between member states and co-ordinate collaboration between them, to safeguard the independence and sovereignty, and to consider in a general way the affairs and interests of Arab countries.
