Maldives has concluded international seminar on Role of Moderation in Countering Terrorism and Promotion of Peace and Security. The seminar was organised under the collaborative effort of Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Maldives National Defence Force, National Counter Terrorism Centre and Maldives Police Service and was held at Kurumba Maldives from April 14 to 15.
The seminar was participated by 16 local representatives and representatives from international organisations and bodies such as Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Arab League and Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO). In addition, representatives from international institutions such as Association of Arab Universities, International Research Centre, Al-Azhar University, Pakistan International University and Malaysia International University were also present at the seminar.
Islamic Ministry said 35 representatives from 15 Muslim countries from around the world participated in the seminar. During the seminar, 12 papers were prepared in both Arabic and English on topics such as causes and solutions of discord between countries and the papers were widely discussed. Papers were prepared and presented by Pakistan, Yemen, Tunisia, Jordan, Morocco and Maldives.
The discussions of the two-day seminar focused on religious ethics in delivering information, the negative effects of delivering incorrect information and the importance of disseminating correct information and challenges faced in countering terrorism.
Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr. Ahmed Ziyad described the seminar as a boost to the ongoing efforts of the government to counter terrorism and violent extremism, speaking at the closing ceremony. Minister Ziyad expressed the seminar showed the efforts of Maldives are acknowledged internationally.
