Elections Commission rejects formation of two new political parties

Elections Commission of Maldives has rejected the application submitted to form two new political parties in Maldives.
In this regard, the formation of The Great Green Connection party was rejected as the required documents to form a new party were not submitted, according to information provided by Elections Commission. Meanwhile, the submission to form Maldivian Republican Party was rejected as a political party already exists under a similar name. No party can register a name, logo, stamp or any other representative item which would resemble an existing political party, according to the Political Party Act.
Currently, there are 6 political parties registered in the Maldives; which are Progressive Party of Maldives, Maldivian Democratic Party, Maldives Development Alliance, Jumhooree Party, Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party and Adhaalath Party.
