President successful in providing clean water: Minister

Minister of Environment and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim has stated the administration has been successful in taking strategic steps to provide safe and clean drinking water to all the islands in the country.

Various projects have been successfully implemented by the administration in the short span of just 4 years, the Environment Minister noted addressing the ceremony held to launch the Communication Strategy for Water and Sewerage. In this regard, Minister Thoriq highlighted only 5 islands and the capital city were provided with proper clean drinking water networks by 2013, while 44% of the country was provided with such networks in the past four years.

Minister Thoriq revealed the administration aims to boost the percentage to 66% by the end of the year. The Minister highlighted the administration paid a huge importance in providing safe and clean drinking water to all islands, as the country faces spans of dry periods across the year. On this note, Minister Thoriq said in the past 4 years clean drinking water storage facilities have been established in 29 islands, while projects to develop such systems in another 61 islands has commenced.  

The Communication Strategy for Water and Sewerage was launched under the special campaign which was launched by the Ministry last year. In addition, a newsletter and an Instagram photo competition was also launched at the ceremony as part of the campaign.
