Criminal Court remands five suspects behind coup attempt

Criminal Court of Maldives has remanded five suspects arrested in connection with the judicial coup attempt, until the end of the investigation into the matter. The court remanded Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, Abdulla Saeed, Hassan Saeed Hussan, Ahmed Faris Maumoon and Ibrahim Siyad Gasim.

The state has charged former President Maummon Abdul Gayoom with terrorism and obstruction of justice. Gayoom was arrested under the State of Emergency on February 5.

The state has pressed a total of four charges against Abdulla Saeed which includes charges of terrorism, obstruction of justice, accepting bribes and obstruction of governmental operations.

Judicial Administrator Hassan Saeed has been charged with accepting bribes and obstruction of justice.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Prosecutor General's Office stated that the Supreme Court's verdict on February 1 was premeditated, with the ulterior motive of toppling a lawfully elected government, in order to serve the interests of specific individuals.
