Minister Thoriq attends Global Conference on Health and Climate

Minister of Environment and Energy, Thoriq Ibrahim has attended the third Global Conference on Health and Climate, at Port Loius, Mauritius from the March 21-22, 2018.

Speaking at the conference, Minister Thoriq noted that there is a clear link between the current climate change trend and increasing disease risk.

Environment Minister mentioned that the re-emergence of some diseases could pose a public health risk for many countries such as Maldives where we have eradicated Malaria in 2015, indicating Maldives is taking many actions to adapt to the changing situations due to climate change and health.

Highlighting the fortification of critical infrastructure to ensure continuity of vital services such as hospitals, provision of safe drinking water, provision and proper sanitation systems and other necessary infrastructure Minister Thoriq stated that if we are to build a climate proof health system, we will need to see the commitment from all especially from the international community.

Third Global Conference on Climate and Health is being held in three locations; the Pacific; the Indian Ocean and the Caribbean. The conference brings together government representatives from over 40 of the most vulnerable countries with WHO, other UN partners and technical experts to advance global action on climate change and health.
