Home Minister defends government reaction to S.C. verdict

Minister of Home Affairs Azleen Ahmed has defended the government actions to stabilise the country, following the February 1 verdict by the Supreme Court. The Home Minister stated, the government acted accordingly to stabilise the country, noting that, had the Supreme Court ruling of February 1 been implemented, the country would have transformed into a mafia state.

Speaking on a programme aired on PSM News, Home Minister Azleen said, the ruling issued on the 1st of February has been nullified by the Supreme Court, in turn, nullifying the need for the government to implement it. He noted that all actions of President Abdulla Yameen Gayoom were in accordance with the constitution and there were no actions that can be singled out as outside legal limitations.

Furthermore, Minister Azleen lauded the security forces, highlighting their efforts to uphold the law. If President Yameen had not declared a State of Emergency, the country would not be experiencing peace and stability today, he underscored. The Minister concluded by reiterating the call to refrain from all actions that could compromise national security.
