Ministry celebrates first intestinal cancer surgery in IGMH

Minister of Health Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim has met with and congratulated the team of doctors who have successfully conducted the first ever total Gastrectomy with Roux-en-Y anastomosis at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH). The surgery was lead by local surgeon Dr. Mohamed Shifan and was accompanied by a team of 9 other qualified doctors, according to IGMH.

Addressing the ceremony, the Health Minister described this as a huge step in the development of the health sector and called on all doctors to serve the country by accomplishing such new achievements. The Minister said the administration would always stay committed in relieving the difficulties faced in the sector at all times.

Minister Nazim also met with the patient who underwent the surgery. The hospital informs that the cancer removal surgery was successful and that the patient is healing.

This was the biggest cancer removal surgery to be completed by doctors of IGMH and dealt with cancer removal procedures in the stomach and the intestine of the patient.
