HDC begins project to develop picnic island in Farukolhufushi

Housing Development Corporation (HDC) reveals it has begun the project to develop a picnic island in Farukolhufushi.

A land area of 5,000 hectares is allocated for the development of the picnic island which would be developed with rooms, cafés, restaurants and a swimming pool, according to HDC. The corporation said with the completion of the picnic island, a bus service would be introduced through Hulhumalé second phase. HDC has also planned to develop a heritage island in Farukolhufushi.

In 1978, a resort was developed in Farukolhufushi and was one of the oldest tourist islands in the country. In January 2015, a construction project to further expand the artificial island of Hulhumalé began, in which Farukolhufushi was connected by landfill and became a part of Hulhumalé.
