EU would not take action against the government: Amb. Shiaan

Ambassador of Maldives to Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg, the United Kingdom and the European Union, H.E. Mr. Ahmed Shiaan has refuted rumours that the EU will soon take action against the Government and its key leaders.

In an exclusive interview with PSM News, Ambassador Shiaan assured that the EU and Maldives share a close and cordial relationship, and affirmed that this bond remains strong.

Referring to the recent statement issued by the Foreign Affairs Council of the European Union and contrary to certain views expressed on the media, Ambassador Shiaan explained that their objective is to encourage Maldives to resolve the current political crisis quickly and smoothly. The EU also highlighted that they stand ready to assist the Maldives and facilitate political dialogue between political parties.

Ambassador Shiaan added that the Maldives is not the only country which faces challenges with regards to the functioning of its democratic institutions. Even Western democratic countries still face constitutional challenges.

Continuing on Ambassador Shiaan said that the relations between the EU and Maldives are not limited to political aspects, but encompasses other areas of cooperation such as trade, security and counter terrorism and most importantly, the fight against global climate change.

Ambassador Shiaan also noted that the European Union would not deviate from its non-intervention policy and assured that the EU would not interfere in the internal politics of a sovereign country. The EU has always urged Maldives to solve its matters through all-inclusive dialogue.

Ambassador Shiaan concluded by saying that Maldives Government is fully capable of resolving its problems, and has reiterated its call for all-party talks.
