Will work without favoring political interests: Elections

The newly appointed President of Elections Commission Ahmed Shareef has assured the Commission will function without favoring any political interests.

The upcoming Presidential Elections will be held according to laws and regulations, Ahmed Shareef affirmed at the press conference held upon his appointment as the President of the Commission. Speaking about the first and foremost priority, Ahmed Shareef said the Commission would attempt to amend the Elections Commissions Act to pave way for more transparency. The Commission will be swift in implementing its mandate and gain the trust of the public in its efforts, according to Shareef.

Ahmed Shareef was appointed as a member of the Elections Commission under Article 168(b) of the Elections Commission Act. President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom handed the letter of appointment to Ahmed Shareef at a function held at the President's Office. The Parliament of Maldives approved Ahmed Shareef as a member of Elections Commission, with 33 parliamentarians voting in favour of the nomination.

Prior to his appointment to the Elections Commission, Ahmed Shareef has been serving as the Managing Director of Fenaka Corporation Limited.
