Maldives excels island nations in the international fora: Sareer

Foreign Secretary Ahmed Sareer has stated Maldives excelled small island nations by proving its mettle in the international fora in the past four years.

Maldives strives to firm its position in the international community by becoming a self-dependent nation, Foreign Secretary Sareer said speaking on a programme aired on PSM News. Speaking on the foreign policy followed by Maldives, the Foreign Secretary said the policy was introduced in 2014 to achieve much desired goals. He noted the country started its journey to become a self-sufficient and a self-dependent country, with the first ever written policy in Maldives.

The Maldivian Foreign Secretary noted Maldives has showcased its leadership to all foreign countries by successfully chairing Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS) and competing for a seat in United Nations Security Council (UNSC). Continuing on, Ahmed Sareer highlighted the key and integral role Maldives has been playing in areas such as climate change, especially since Maldives started chairing AOSIS. In this regard, Sareer noted Maldives assisted some larger nations in achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement.

Shedding light on the relations between Maldives and international organisations such as European Union and United Nations, Foreign Secretary Sareer assured relations would continue to enhance with the active role Maldives play in the international fora. On this note, Ahmed Sareer highlighted that is a leader in calling for the rights of Muslims in Syria, Palestine and Myanmar. He concluded by assuring that Maldives would continue its work in protecting the rights of all Muslims.
