One who abuses power is most traitorous: President

President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has claimed one who abuses power and throws the country into dangerous circumstances is the most traitorous to the nation. President Abdulla Yameen made the remarks at the function held by Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) to show support and appreciation for the security forces for foiling an attempted coup orchestrated by the opposition.

It is clear there are people who take advantage of their lawful powers noting it is a lesson learnt from the attempted judicial coup underscoring that who betrayed the country are those who tried to misuse the power vested to them under the constitution to create unrest in the country are the most traitorous, President Yameen noted addressing the function. The President noted that some people are able to call for foreign intervention in Maldives because individuals who wish to create chaos in the country are influencing and supporting such actions.

Continuing on, the President reiterated that it was the duty and obligation of the Head of State to safeguard the country and its interests in all situations, affirming that an elected President is not someone who will hide during difficult times for the country. President Yameen reiterated commitment to serve the country and ease the situation.

In his speech, President Yameen highlighted that ensuring the supremacy of the Maldivian Constitution was an obligation of every State institution, including the Supreme Court, noting that the Constitution bestows an absolute authority upon the Head of State, to steer the country towards a safe passage.

Moreover, President Yameen expressed gratitude for the firmness of security forces to secure the sovereignty and security of the nation.
