IAC opens a Ghouta Emergency Relief Fund in Maldives

International Aid Campaign has opened Ghouta Emergency Relief Fund in Maldives to help the Muslims suffering in Ghouta city of Syria. The emergency relief fund which is open for a 15-day period would close on March 11, according to IAC.

The charity has launched a nation-wide campaign with the affiliation of various other local non-governmental organisations and noted only financial aid would be accepted, Media Coordinator of IAC Adam Naif said in an interview. In this regard, Naif called on all Maldivians to donate as much as possible to help the people trapped in Ghouta city.

The besieged Eastern Ghouta, which is an opposition-held suburb of Damascus, has been the subject of intensified airstrikes and shelling since February 18. An estimated 400,000 people are currently trapped inside the area, more than half of whom are said to be children, and almost all are in dire need of humanitarian aid, according to reports.  Hundreds have been reported killed, and many more were wounded in the attacks.

Residents are holed up in basements and medical charities decried attacks on a dozen hospitals, as the United Nations pleaded for a truce in Ghouta, which is the only big rebel bastion near the capital.
