Minister of Home Affairs Azleen Ahmed has called on all local councils in Maldives to abide by the true principles of the Constitution and to provide services equally to all citizens.
In the official address on the occasion of Decentralisation Day, Home Minister Azleen Ahmed called on the councils to responsibly utilize the powers granted by the Constitution. Minister Azleen stressed that utmost priority must be given by the councils to assist the Administration to run as a unitary State.
In this regard, Minister Azleen noted the government and the local councils should united to outperform the 9 goals set by the Local Government Authority to be achieved in a 5 year period. The goals include empowering women and boosting their role in the development of the Maldivian economy. The Minister concluded by urging all local councils to provide assistance to the Administration in its efforts to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.
Maldives adapted the Decentralisation Act on February 26, 2011.
