Cases of detainees to be sent to PG office: Police

Maldives Police Service has revealed that strong evidence has been attained against former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed and Judge Ali Hameed in the investigation of the attempted coup. The Police Service further revealed the investigation of the attempted coup would be completed and filed at Prosecutor General's Office by next week.

Strong documented evidence has been attained from Maldives and abroad which has confirmed the involvement of the detainees arrested for investigation, Spokesperson of Maldives Police Service Superintendent Ahmed Shifan revealed briefing the media on the investigation on the attempted coup by the opposition.

In this regard, the Spokesperson said the Police have extended the scope of the investigation by deploying teams to foreign countries to gather evidence. Superintendent Ahmed Shifan revealed the two judges arrested have vastly tried to influence criminal investigation proceedings by tampering with evidence and ordering to halt investigations against members of the opposition. He further noted the judges have tried to influence and direct various court proceedings in lower courts.

Continuing on, the Superintendent of Police expressed regret on actions of some lawyers who try to tarnish the image of the institution and called on legal representatives to stay loyal to their duty and spread authentic and true information to the public and warned that strict action would be taken against individuals who try to spread such baseless rumors.
