Utmost priority given to well-being of the people: Azima Shakoor

The Government of Maldives has given its commitment in staying dedicated in the process of democratisation, human rights development, good governance and economic development of the country and assured the well-being of the people is given the utmost priority.

Speaking on a programme aired on Sri Lankan Ada Derana TV, Minister of Legal Affairs at President's Office Azima Shakoor called on all foreign countries to not only look at the current political situation in the country but have an assessment of the great range of development the Government has brought to Maldives.

Briefing on the efforts of the Administration to tackle the current political situation in the country, Minister of Legal Affairs at President's Office Azima Shakoor said Maldives is currently witnessing a deadlock caused due to both the nascent constitution and politics. The Legal Affairs Minister echoed the invitation of the Administration to its international partners to visit Maldives to closely observe and understand what is actually happening in the country. In this regard, Minister Azim Shakoor called on the foreign countries to depend on true and authentic facts about the current political situation of Maldives.

On this note, the Minister gave the Maldivian government's commitment in staying dedicated in the process of democratisation, human rights development, good governance and economic development of the nation and assured the well-being of the people is given the utmost priority.

"We have the aspiration of solving the issues in the nation and serving the nation towards this goal. It might look difficult to hope for a local consensus but it is not impossible. But with the elctions coming ahead in September and the all-party talks seem helpful. We the government would give the commitment in the process of democratization, human rights development, good governance and economic development and well-being of the people." Azima Shakoor said.

Continuing on, the Maldivian Legal Affairs Minister called on all foreign countries to not only look at the current political situation in the country but have an assessment of the great range of development the Government has brought to Maldives. In this regard, Minister Azima highlighted the vast horizons the Administration has expanded the country's scope in fields such as education, tourism and women empowerment.

Speaking on the programme, former Chair of Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS) Robert Van Lierop called on all foreign countries to give time and space which Maldives needs for its development and nurturing as the nation is an evolving democracy. In this regard, Robert Van Lierop said that the unnecessary influence of bigger nations would have negative effect in the development of democracy of small and developing nations.

"Time and space is needed for any country to develop and nurture for a developing democracy. We cannot expect institutions to be built over night and be perfect. National security is a complicated issue. Small countries are vulnerable." Robert Van Lierop said.

The current political situation created by the oppositional alliance has become a hot topic of discussion worldwide. While major concerns have been raised from all around the world, the Administration has remained steadfast in delivering its high performance in this critical period.
