MTCC to reclaim land for waste management facility in Thilafushi

Ministry of Environment and Energy has signed an agreement with Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) to reclaim land to establish a waste management facility in Thilafushi Island. The agreement was signed by Minister of Environment and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim and Deputy Managing Director of MTCC Ahmed Kurik Riza.

The Administration is the most successful and the only Administration which has tackled major challenges faced in waste management issues accross Maldives, Environment Minister Thoriq Ibrahim said briefing the media at the signing ceremony. In this regard, Minister Thoriq noted the Administration introduced the first ever waste management policy in the country.

MTCC will reclaim a land area of 15 hectares within a period of 8 months, according to the agreement signed. The project is funded by the Public Sector Investment Programme (PSIP) budget and would cost over USD 6.8 million.

In addition to the waste management facility to be established in Thilafushi, which would revolutanise waste management in Maldives, incinerators are also expected to be established in the island to manage 500 tonnes of waste per day.
