Police denies claims regarding number of individuals in custody

Maldives Police Service has dismissed claims regarding the number of individuals taken into custody during the recent illegal protests held by the opposition coalition.

Maldives Police revealed that a total of 7 individuals were taken into custody for obstruction of Police duty on February 16 and 17, noting that it has come to the attention of the institute that there has been some false information circulating regarding the number of individuals taken into custody. No arrests were made due to protesting, but the individuals were arrested for the obstruction of Police duty, according to Superintendent of Police Ahmed Shifan.

The Spokesperson of Maldives Police Service further added that the arrests were made in accordance to the court orders and rights would be guaranteed to the detainees.
