Police denies rumors about withholding legal rights of detainees

Maldives Police Service has denied rumors about withholding legal rights of detainees.

Police Spokesperson Ahmed Shifan assured that no rights under the Police General Regulation are being withheld for detainees, noting that a lot of fabricated information about the current investigation on the attempted coup.

The Police Service is facing difficulty in allowing equal time for legal consultations as required by the regulation due to an increase in number of arrests and investigations into serious crimes during the State of Emergency, according to the Spokesperson. He added a special guideline is in effect during the State of Emergency to allow meetings between persons under police custody.

Maldives Police Service has allocated a duration not exceeding 30 minutes for legal consultations during the State of Emergency.
