Police denies claims of extremists working in the force

Maldives Police Service has denied that religious extremists, who have taken part in civil wars in Syria and Iraq, are working for the institution as claimed by former President Mohamed Nasheed.

In a statement to Indian newspaper, Times of India, former President Mohamed Nasheed raised claims that religious extremists who had taken part in civil wars in Syria and Iraq have returned to Maldives and are currently serving in Maldives Police Service.

Saying that the claims have no basis in truth and was made for personal benefit to create misconceptions and mistrust of the police force, in a statement issued, Maldives Police Service categorically denied the allegations.

Maldives Police requested not to disseminate such false and malicious rumors regarding the institution and warned that necessary legal and regulatory action will be taken against individuals who make such claims.
