Government welcomes EU/UK delegation visit

The Government of Maldives welcomed the half day visit by the EU/UK Delegation to the Maldives.

During the visit the delegation met with Foreign Secretary Ahmed Sareer, in the absence of the Minister of Foreign Affairs who is currently traveling to Pakistan as a Special Envoy of the President, and senior officials at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The delegation had fruitful discussions on the current situation with the Foreign Secretary during which meetings with Cabinet Ministers were requested. However, since Cabinet meetings were already in session, the delegation had chosen to leave, by the time the Cabinet Consultations were concluded.

Special Envoys of the President are currently visiting several friendly countries. Minister of Economic Development Mohamed Saeed had departed to China with Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Mohamed Asim had departed to Pakistan. Furthermore, Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture Dr. Mohamed Shainee departed to Saudi Arabia.

India was the first nation for Envoys to be proposed to visit; however the nation could not receive Envoys at the time due to the unavailability of senior government officials.

The Government has extended an invitation to all development partners and organisations to assess the current situation in the Maldives and to observe and independently verify for themselves that life remains unaffected with peace and calm prevailing across the nation. Economic activity remains unaffected with no restrictions on travel in and out, and within, the country.

The Government also stands ready to engage and conduct constructive dialogue to discuss and provide clarification on issues relating to the ongoing developments in the country and has a dedicated team of Cabinet Ministers ready to meet any further foreign delegations, according to the statement released by Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
