Primary function of the government is to protect its citizens

Government of the Maldives has assured that the primary function of the State is to protect its citizens from harm. Commenting on the situation of the country,

International Spokesperson Ibrahim Hussain Shihab stated that the President has been compelled to declare a State of Emergency, due to the risk currently posed to national security. Throughout this unusual period, the safety of citizens and tourists will be ensured and there will be little change to people's day-to-day business assuring that the primary function of the state is to protect its citizens from harm, noted the International Spokesperson.

Ibrahim Hussain Shihab reiterated that the implementation of the Supreme Court ruling is in its current form incompatible with maintenance of public safety highlighting that the administration's repeated engagement with the Supreme Court speaks to the urgency towards resolving the issue. Statement of the International Spokesperson underscores the vital importance it attaches to the relationship between the government and the judiciary.

He reminded the Supreme Court that is bound by law noting that the Supreme Court ruling stands in defiance of the highest authority in the country which is the constitution.
