Providing uninterrupted electricity to all parts of the nation is one of the main pledges of the administration of President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.
The current administration has made great strides towards fulfilling this goal. The administration has taken successful steps towards providing cheap and uninterrupted electricity to all parts of the nation.
In this regard, State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has established a well-managed network to provide electricity to the capital city Male', while STELCO and Fenaka Cooperation have progressed at a fast pace towards solving issues faced in providing consistent electricity in other parts of the nation.
Under this initiative, a 50 megawatt power project titled the ‘Fifth Power Project’ has commenced at Hulhumale'. The project which is touted as the largest project to be carried out in this sector,it is worth USD 77.9 million.
This project is expected to cope with the surging electricity usage in Male' and Hulhumale' by establishing a network via China-Maldives Friendship Bridge. The administration has also expressed a keen interest in expanding its scope to produce renewable energy in the nation.
Under this objective, the administration aims to achieve the goal of producing 30% of total electricity via renewable energy throughout the day. Currently the project has been implemented in 17 islands while 27 islands have been contracted to establish this project. Feasibility studies are currently underway in 26 of these islands.
In the past year, the administration has carried out a lot of efforts to provide uninterrupted electricity in various atolls of Maldives. In this regard 177 new generators have been installed in various islands while cable work has been strengthened in 50 islands to minimize issues faced in providing uninterrupted electricity service. In addition, 10 power houses have been shifted to uninhabited areas of islands while power house upgradation work is progressing at a fast pace in various islands.
