The Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dato’ Sri Mohammad Najib bin Tun Haji Razak and First Lady Datin Rosmah Mansor will undertake an official visit to the Maldives from the 19th to the 20th of this month, at the invitation of President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom and First Lady Madam Fathimath Ibrahim.

Bilateral deliberations are set to take place to enhance the existing ties and development partnership between the two countries. A number of memorandums of understanding are also to be signed during the Prime Minister’s visit.

This year marks the 49th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties with Malaysia. Formal bilateral relations were established in 1968.

The Maldives and Malaysia currently collaborate extensively in the fields of human resources development, military and police cooperation as well as development of the institutional and legislative framework of the judiciary.

Prime Minister Dato’ Sri Mohammad Najib bin Tun Haji Razak would be undertaking this visit after 33 years since a Prime Minister of Malaysia undertook an official visit to the Maldives. The last official visit was undertaken by former Prime Minister, H.E. Mahathir Mohamad in 1984.
