Initiated by President Yamin Abdul Gayyoom, the 5th Power Development Project is the largest power project implemented in the Maldives. The 5th Power Development Project, designed to install six 8.9 Megawatt of diesel power generation, is contracted to China-based Dongfang Electric International Corporation.
The electricity development project which is established to capacity surge in both Hulhumale' and Male' city is the biggest project conducted by State Electric Company Limited (STELCO).
In an exclusive interview with PSM News, Project Manager for the 5th Power Development Project, Mariyam Ali stated that concrete casting for the first 2 storage tank foundation of the 79 million U.S. dollar project has now been completed. Mariyam Ali said that the steel structure required for the power house and control building has arrived at the site. She added that the construction work of oil unloading pump house, sea water intake pump house and maintenance workshop have now commenced.
Engines of the project are expected to be brought to site and installed in early 2018. The capacity additions at present would only provide a short term solution as Male' and Hulhumale' have developed robustly over the years. The completion of the construction of the new power development project would address the issues faced by STELCO in providing uninterrupted and cheaper power supply to Hulhumale' and Male' city.
