Gov't to establish water facilities in 4 islands from GCF aid

Government has decided to establish water facilities in four islands from the grant aid received from Green Climate Fund (GCF).

Safe water facilities will be established in Nolhivaramfaru of Haa Dhaalu Atoll, Foakaidhoo of Shaviyani Atoll, Maduvvari of Raa Atoll and Dharavandhoo of Baa Atoll under the GCF, according to Ministry of Finance and Treasury. Under the project, tanks for water storage will be built including the establishment of a system to produce safe water.

Government aims to provide 70% of the population with safe water and sewerage systems before the end of 2018. In 2013, only 30 islands out of the 180 populated islands were accessible to safe water and sewerage systems.

The Green Climate Fund Project will deliver safe and secure freshwater to 105 thousand people facing risks from climate change. The five year project targets 49 islands across 13 atolls of the Maldives that continue to experience water shortages due to low rainfall and extended dry periods.
