Nasheed cannot compete in 2018 elections - Minister Shainee

Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture Dr. Mohamed Shainee has emphasised that former president Mohamed Nasheed can in no means run for presidency in 2018 election unless amendments are brought to the constitution. In an interview to a private media, Former President Mohamed Nasheed stated that he will compete in the 2018 election, adding that he will maintain the position for an year if elected as the candidate of a joint coalition.

In response to the comments made by the Former President, Dr. Shainee tweeted that even though he believes that he can compete in the election with foreign influences, it is impossible without bringing alterations to the constitution.

The election will be held in accordance with the Maldivian Constitution, adding that no foreign influence or discussions are needed, reiterated Fisheries Minister.

Former President Nasheed was found guilty on terror charges in March 2015, and was sentenced to 13 years in jail. An individual has to wait three years after completing a sentence to compete in a presidential election, according to the Maldivian constitution.
