Maldives assures reservoir of credibility if elected to UNSC

Maldives has assured to build a reservoir of hope, trust and credibility when elected to United Nations Security Council.

In a statement delivered On the Question of Equitable Representation on and Increase in the Membership of the Security Council and Other Matters Related to the Security Council, Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the United Nations, Dr. Ali Naseer Mohamed, reiterated that Maldives has maintained a consistent position on the reform of the Security Council, adding that the number of permanent members in the Council must be increased.

In the statement, Maldivian Permanent Representative to United Nations said that Maldives believes that the membership of the Security Council should come from both developing and developed countries, including from the small island developing states, to reflect the diversity of the United Nations membership. The Maldives top diplomat at the United Nations assured that if elected for 2019-2020 term Maldives, in collaboration with partners, will build a reservoir of hope, of trust, of credibility, that will redefine the ordering principle in multilateral diplomacy, to one where right will become the might.

Every country can bring diversity and offer unique perspectives mentioning that diverse members that can contribute to the new, non-traditional understandings of security and peace, expressed the Maldivian Permanent Representative. Noting that every country deserves an opportunity to serve, Permanent Representative Dr. Ali Naseer said that each country, mighty or tiny, rich or poor, deserves to be heard, and have a say. In his statement, Dr. Ali Naseer highlighted various reasons why Maldives deserve a seat at the Security Council.

In this regard, he mentioned that Maldives was the 117th country to join the United Nations and 104 countries that joined before Maldives, have already served on the Security Council and that, Maldives, still after half a century  have not had the opportunity to do so along with nearly all the small island developing states. Maldives believes that every country is determined to serve, determined to make its contribution, in its own way, to the maintenance of international peace and security, and to uphold the principles of the United Nations, added Permanent Representative.

Permanent Representative questioned whether the competition is fair for Small Island Developing States (SIDS). The diplomat noted that only eight SIDS have managed to secure a seat on the Council since its establishment. He said smaller countries can no longer campaign on an equal footing and noted that it means that countries that need to be heard, that can bring unique perspectives and fresh, new ideas end up not being on the Council.
