Maldives has taken firm action in countering terrorism - Minister

Minister of Defence and National Security, Adam Shareef Umar has stated Maldives has taken firm action in countering terrorist threats to the nation under the initiative of President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom. The Defence Minister made the statement while addressing the inaugural session, in the Regional Meeting for South East Asian Countries on Effective Central Authorities.

Noting that terrorism is a global phenomenon which is a threat to one and all, Defence Minister Adam Shareef stated that it is high time to take collaborative and firm action against terrorists and terrorism at a global scale. He further shed light on various, firm action taken by the administration of President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom to counter any threat of terrorism. The best approach to counter the activities of terrorism and extremism is formulating and strengthening laws to counter such activities, added the Minister Adam Shareef Umar.

The Regional Representative for South Asia of United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime Sergey Kapinos and Legal Officer of UNODC Suey Skokie addressed at the opening session.

The Regional Meeting for South East Asian Countries on Effective Central Authorities held at Holiday Inn Kandooma Maldives would conclude on November 9. The meeting is organized under the initiative of United Nations Counter Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate (CTED) in collaboration with United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).

46 representatives from 16 South Asian countries are participating in the event.
