Maldives holds international workshop on Islamic Finance

Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture Dr. Mohamed Shainee has revealed that major progress has been made in establishing Maldives as the major hub for Islamic financing sector in the South Asia region. Addressing the keynote at the opening ceremony of the workshop, Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture Dr. Mohamed Shainee stated that principles of Islamic finance has been well accepted throughout the world and is being practiced at the most developed countries in the world.

In addition, Fisheries Minister Shainee stated that Islamic financing sector is amongst the prime focuses of the administration of President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom. Major progress has been made in the efforts of the current administration in making Maldives the major hub for Islamic financing sector in the South Asia region, revealed Minister Shainee.

In an exclusive interview with PSM News, Managing Director of Maldives Centre for Islamic Finance Ibrahim Didi stated that the workshop would provide a platform for various vibrant personals working in the Islamic financing sector to meet and share ideas. In addition, the workshop would have an analytical review on the challenges faced by Islamic financing sectors in various countries.

Islamic financing sector is gaining momentum of success in the Maldivian society and that the sector has huge scope and prominence in the future, according to the Chairperson of Maldives Centre for Islamic Finance, Dr. Aishath Muneeza.

The international workshop titled “Islamic Monetary Economics and Institution: Theory and Practice” is organised by Maldives Centre for Islamic Finance (MCIF) by collaborating with Research and Training Institute of Islamic Development Bank. The core objective of the workshop is to analyse the studies and researches made in the Islamic financing sector and use them in strengthening and developing the framework of the sector in Maldives.

The two day workshop held at the conference hall of State Electric Company Limited has participants from 14 countries from Europe, Asia and Africa.
