Kulhudhufushi Council pledges support for airport development

The Island Council of Kulhudhufushi of Haa Dhaalu Atoll has pledged full commitment and support to establish the airport in the most populous island in the north of the country.

The pledge by the island council coincides with the government’s ongoing efforts to commence an airport development project in the island. Developing an airport in Kulhudhuffushi was an electoral pledge of President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom. However, development of Kulhudhuffushi's domestic airport was on halt until recently.

The government has now geared up efforts to establish an airport in Kulhudhufushi. The island council hopes the airport development project can be concluded as early as possible as it is a dream of the vast population of the island. It will not hinder any developmental projects which will benefit the people and added that the full support and commitment would be given to the project, the council revealed.

The council can play a crucial role in such developmental projects conducted in advantage of the people, President of Kulhudhufishi Island Council, Abdulla Latheef Hassan stated while speaking with PSM News. He noted that establishing an airport will make transportation easier for not only the people living in Kulhudhufushi but also to the people living in nearby islands in Haa Alifu Atoll, Haa Dhaalu Atoll and Shaviyani Atoll. Stating that Kulhudhufushi Hospital is the main hospital in the region, he cited that with the airport, it would ease the transportation of casualties to the capital, Malé city.

The Government of Maldives has commenced a number of airport development projects in the past four years with the aim of easing the transportation difficulties faced by the majority of the population, spread across 200 islands.
