Pre-departure screening to curb immigration issues

Maldives Immigration has revealed that pre-departure screening of Bangladesh workers will address issues existing in their current recruitment process.

Under the new regulation, Bangladesh workers now will have to complete a medical checkup and security screening process before arriving in Maldives. Maldives Immigration reveals that the main aim of the regulation is to prevent victimisation of migrant workers and to address issues existing in the current recruitment process and streamline.

This change is expected to stop deportees from entering Maldives, said Media Official of Immigration Hassan Khaleel while speaking regarding the Maldives Immigration Pre-Departure Screening System (MIPSS). Medical checkup will only be accepted from facilities accredited by the Health Protection Agency of Maldives, Hassan Khaleel added.

The conduction of medical checkups will be assigned to a company in Bangladesh, Maldives Immigration stated. Bangladesh workers can only enter Maldives after conducting tests carried jointly by the Embassy of Bangladesh, according to the Maldives Immigration.

MIPSS is designed to minimise recruitment fraud and victimisation of migrant workers, conduct health and security screening. The system will provide opportunities for employers, employees and agents to communicate and monitor progress of the recruitment process.

Maldives Immigration revealed that although initially, MIPSS is only implemented while recruiting workers from Bangladesh, it will be extended to recruitment of workers from other neighboring countries as well.
