Maldives to work with stakeholders in sustaining peace

Maldives has stated that it will work with stakeholders concerned in crafting shared solutions to establish sustainable peace.

At the United Nations Security Council Open Debate on the Situation of Middle East and the Question of Palestine, Permanent Representative of Maldives to United Nations stated that respecting basic human rights and human dignity, respecting self-determination, recognizing and respecting the independence and sovereignty of each other are values that Maldives will promote and bring to the work of the Security Council if it is elected to the Council at the elections held in next June, for the term 2019 to 2020.

At the statement Permanent Representative Dr. Ali Naseer Mohamed emphasised that it should not cost too much for the warring parties in Syria to respect the basic human rights of the Palestinians and fundamental rights of the other. The Maldivian Permanent Representative said that in Palestine and Syria, it is the absence of one important human rights value that is missing which is at the core of the conflict.

Noting that it should not cost too much for Israel to respect the basic human rights and human dignity of Palestinians, respecting the right of Palestinians for self-determination, recognising and respecting the independence and sovereignty of Palestine is in everyone's interests, Dr. Ali Naseer Mohamed emphasised the need to respect each other.

Moreover, during the statement, Maldives strongly condemned the restrictions imposed by the occupying power to alter the historic and legal status quo in East Jerusalem, notably the Al Haram al Sharif, including the Al Agsa Mosque. In addition, the Maldives called on the occupying power, Israel, to immediately stop its illegal activities and respect its international legal obligations, in particular, the relevant Security Council Resolutions.

The Maldives further called upon the international community as well as the members of the Security Council to bring an immediate end to the conflict.
