The United Nations Resident Coordinator and the Resident Representative of United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to Maldives has stated that it is time to bring out innovative ideas and ways to deliver Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to the general public. Addressing the closing ceremony of the first ever Data Journalism Workshop held in Maldives, the Resident Representative of UNDP to Maldives stated that such workshops are vital for the journalists in Maldives.
Involvement of world renowned trainers guiding journalists in the workshop would have a great impact on journalists who participated in the three-day workshop, stated the United Nations Resident Coordinator Shoko Noda. The Resident Representative of UNDP highlighted that it is time to bring out innovative ideas and ways to deliver the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to the general public and requested all the journalists who participated in the event to do their role in achieving this goal. United Nations always welcomes journalists and their stories in spreading the messages of SDGs, added Resident Coordinator Shoko Noda.
The three-day the data Journalism which concluded on October 18 had a field trip to the Ukulhas of Alifu Alifu Atoll. The participants visited the developmental areas of the island and interacted with the citizens to attain work in achieving the SDGs, according to organisers. During the field trip, participants visited the hydroponic system established by UNDP titled, UNDP Mangroves for the Future Project, the waste management site and the desalination plant established in the island. The workshop was lead by Syed Nazakat who is an award-winning journalist, media entrepreneur, and founder and editor-in-chief of DataLEADS which conducts data analysis, visualisation, and Pan-Asia boot camps. A total of 16 participants from different media outlets participated in the workshop.
