Over MVR13.5 billion owed to state since 2008: CSAR

Over MVR13.5 billion is owed to the state since 2008, in debt, fines and misappropriated funds, according to the Commission on State Assets Recovery.

Many cases of corruption are being investigated, with importance given on cases involving more than MVR5 million, Minister of Home affairs Azleen Ahmed stated during a press conference held by the Commission on State Assets Recovery established by a Presidential Decree. After investigating cases involving more than MVR5 million, investigation of minor cases will be begin, the Home Minister said. Work is currently being carried out in collaboration with local and international agencies in conducting the investigations, Minister affirmed.

Cases of corruption from 1991 to 2017 are being investigated by the commission, Home Minister noted. Previously recovery efforts of lost state assets were not given importance, he highlighted.

The main purpose of establishing the Commission on State Assets Recovery is to analyse efforts taken by the institutions to recover state assets highlighted in reports published by the Office of the Auditor General and the Anti-Corruption Commission. The President has granted full authority to the Commission to independently carry out its duties, and take action accordingly.
